About GIS Power
What is GIS Power?
Green Island Solutions, S.A. de C.V. (GIS Power) is the Mexican energy operations subsidiary of PMI International Group, which has built critical infrastructure since 1983. We develop, finance, build and operate energy projects with solar and battery storage (BESS) as primary power. About the group.
Is my project the right size for you?
Write to us whatever the size. We review each request by its demand, location and stage, and reply with the path that suits it best, including projects that start with a few MW and grow in phases, such as a Green Data Center.
Projects
What kind of projects do you develop?
Large-scale generation: solar parks, hybrids with battery storage (BESS), gas-fired generation and islanded microgrids, plus cogeneration where the site has a steady thermal load. For industrial parks, data centers, energy-intensive industry, developers and governments. See our project track record.
What information do you need to get started?
Three things: the site location, the project’s demand or size, and its stage (idea, site identified, permitting under way or ready to finance). With that, we can tell you which route makes sense.
Who operates the plant after commissioning?
GIS Power can operate and maintain it under a long-term contract with agreed availability, as at Residencial Bosque Real, where the group delivered the EPC and the operations and maintenance from 2009 to 2016.
Finance
Does my company have to invest in the plant?
Not necessarily. With a power purchase agreement (PPA), energy as a service or a BOOT structure, the project company makes the investment and your company pays for the energy or the service. Compare contracting models.
How long are the contracts?
From 48 to 180 months, depending on the structure.
What is an SPV and why is it used?
A company created for a single project. It keeps the project’s assets, contracts and debt separate from those of its shareholders, and it is what banks and funds require to finance it. SPV structure.
Permits
Do I need a permit to generate my own power?
It depends on capacity. A plant under 0.7 MW is an exempt generator and needs no permit (LSE art. 19). Self-consumption of 0.7 MW or more requires a CNE generation permit; between 0.7 and 20 MW, grid-connected self-consumption may follow a simplified process (LSE art. 30). Generation used only for emergencies needs no permit (LSE art. 19). Permitting and development.
Can I sell surplus energy?
Under grid-connected self-consumption, surplus energy can only be sold to CFE, with a valid generation permit and interconnection agreement. If the plant is intermittent, like solar, and injects energy into the grid, it must have its own storage backup or pay for it (LSE art. 32).
Data centers
How small can a Green Data Center start?
It can start with a few MW if the plan is to grow in phases. What matters is a growth plan for the IT load and a long-term energy contract. Green Data Center.
What data center experience does the group have?
The group has designed and built 13 data centers and critical facilities since 1983, including Alestra Green Data Center in Querétaro: 35,000 m² with 100% of its power and chilled water generated on site. See the Alestra project.
